The podiatric residency was originally founded in 1998 as a podiatric medicine residency program through EVMS. In order to meet demand, the program was transformed to a podiatric medicine and surgery program in 2002. The program has recently been converted to a podiatric medicine and surgery 36-month residency with intentions to provide a reconstructive rear foot and ankle surgery added credential.
We have enjoyed a great deal of interest in our program. Over 58 applications were received for the one spot offered most recently. Although we do not have specific minimum grade point for board scores, we do consider application to our program to be a highly competitive undertaking. Many of our residents have been selected from prior externs and clerks.
Some of the reasons for the interest in our program may include our residents’ ability to fulfill their required caseloads very promptly. We also enjoy an interesting variety of patient care environments. Our residents participate in an indigent patient care clinic, Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic, every week under the supervision of a variety of faculty members. They also enjoy opportunities to participate in both inpatient and outpatient care of patients at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital, and occasionally at several other Sentara Hospitals. Also the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is a frequently visited training site.
Because of the interest in our program, we have successfully matched all available spots in our program through participation in the Centralized Residency Interview Program and Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies operated by the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine.
Although this program is small in comparison to other programs, the Eastern Virginia Medical School Podiatric Residency Program utilizes the clinical excellence of EVMS faculty to provide extensive surgical and academic training. Each resident develops a strong level of competence through the involvement of the EVMS faculty.
Visitors to our program are welcome with short notice. Externships and clerkship arrangements have been made through almost all of the schools of podiatric medicine in the United States.
