EVMS Biorepository

The EVMS biorepository, located in Lewis Hall, collects, processes and stores biological specimens and associated data. The facilities include an environmentally controlled space that provides a low-temperature, low-humidity environment to maximize the life and cooling ability of the specimen freezers for storage of clinical tissues and fluids.‌ There is an adjoining room used for the storage of patient tissue blocks and an additional clean room for sample allocation and processing equipped with a sample sublimation platform and barcode sample entry system. The resource has an on-site, full-time staff for specimen processing, inventory management and database management.

The Biorepository has over 50,000 human samples available including prostate, kidney, bladder, breast, skin and head & neck tissues, 35,000 Blood related samples (including Serum, Plasma, Buffy Coat) , 1500 EPS-Urine, 5000 Pure-Urine , 800 Direct EPS, 4000 FFPE tissue (Blocks and Slides), 5,000 tissues (including OCT, Fresh Frozen, FFPE). The Biorepository is paralleled by a comprehensive clinical data repository. The Web based management system maintains the data in a secure SQL Server database and currently supports over 20 active study protocols.

EVMS Slide Imaging Services

We now offer high resolution slide scanning on our recently acquired NanoZoomer-SQ Digital slide scanner.

The NanoZoomer is a family of digital slide scanners that convert glass slides into high-resolution digital data by high-speed scanning. NanoZoomer-SQ is Hamamatsu’s new desktop single slide scanner for creating whole slide images of single tissue slides. Its very compact size makes it suitable even for the smallest lab, while maintaining the well renowned reliability and robustness of Hamamatsu whole slide scanners.
