Message from Department Chairman

The Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School established its residency training program in 1973. In that short period of time the Department has experienced tremendous growth in its academic, clinical, and research programs. We offer an outstanding, well balanced exposure to all aspects of the field of Otolaryngology including otology/neurotology, head and neck oncology, pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, skull base surgery, rhinology, general otolaryngology, allergy, audiology, and speech pathology. All full time faculty are fellowship trained and are recognized leaders in their respective fields of subspecialty.

The Department currently matches through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP),  alternating between two or three residents positions each year. The PGY-1 year is now under the direct supervision of the Otolaryngology Program Director with dedicated experience provided in Otolaryngology as well as Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Trauma, Pediatric Surgery, Oncology, Vascular and General Surgery and Sleep Medicine.

Clinical, academic, and research facilities are provided through four affiliated institutions, including the only freestanding tertiary children's hospital in the State of Virginia. Ambulatory experience is provided at our main campus facility as well as several satellite clinics, including our dedicated Hearing and Balance Center and Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Center. Housestaff are exposed to a large and diverse patient population ensuring a tremendous clinical experience combined with essential academic activities,  along with dedicated time for research.

We appreciate your interest in our residency program and invite you to explore the training opportunities available. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about the Department or its programs.
