Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
Welcome to the Eastern Virginia Medical School Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency web site. Our residents and faculty are incredibly proud of our program and invite you to explore what the program has to offer. EVMS was founded by a grassroots community effort, and since opening in 1973, has had the honor of training aspiring physicians and forever impacting the healthcare of the Hampton Roads region and beyond. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has been driven by pioneers such as Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones who were responsible for the nation’s first successful in-vitro fertilization. We echo the mission of EVMS by striving to be the most community-oriented program in the country, with emphasis on the core values of “Excellence, Collegiality, and Integrity”, which we feel are essential to an effective learning environment and providing quality care to our patients.
Our department is committed to providing residents with an educational experience that will not only prepare you to be a competent Obstetrician and Gynecologist, but also to serve as a Consultant to your community and to become a leader in Women’s Health Care. The learning environment is supportive, with a strong focus on patient safety and emphasizing the concept that all members of the healthcare team are vital to the successful patient care. Camaraderie among fellow residents and between faculty and residents is often identified as an incredible asset of this program.
We provide a rigorous program that involves general obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine (including diagnostic ultrasound and genetics counseling), reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. In particular our strengths include diagnostic ultrasound techniques, in depth exposure to high risk obstetrics, one-on-one experience with the REI faculty of the Jones Institute, experiences in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, a vigorous research program, a robotic curriculum, and the ability to work with both our core academic faculty and private community faculty who are committed to teaching.
Again, welcome to our website. We encourage you to explore what our program has to offer!
