    • High-risk obstetrician and Director of the EVMS Diabetes in Pregnancy Program, Dr. Margarita de Veciana is a pioneer in investigating the use of oral hypoglycemic agents for management of gestational diabetes. Her research interests include medical complications during pregnancy (diabetes, thromboembolic and autoimmune disorders) and antenatal fetal heart rate testing. She has contributed to numerous medical journals, and has presented on topics of high-risk pregnancy both nationally and internationally.  She is an active member of the medical societies of: American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, American Diabetes Association, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  She also serves as a peer reviewer for numerous medical journals including the American Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics and Gynecology and British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.                            

      Dr. deVeciana has advanced new standards in patient care for her specialty by developing new algorithms in the electronic health record environment that are utilized by her EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine partners and nationally in her Obstetrics specialty.  She has also developed a multi-disciplinary Diabetes in Pregnancy program which offers comprehensive techno-advanced management of diabetes utilizing the latest technologies available. The high risk obstetricians in EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine provide services within a geographic region that covers 1.6 million residents over 2,600 square miles of Hampton Roads Virginia.

      In addition to her of love of patient care, Dr. de Veciana is also an exceptional innovative teacher. This has earned her numerous teaching awards including the national CREOG teaching award, the national APGO Excellence in teaching award in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Teacher of the Year award at EVMS OB/GYN. She has also earned numerous awards for her community service including but not limited to the “Healthcare Hero award” from the Virginia Pilot Inside Business, Coastal Virginia Magazine's Top Doc, the “Award for Excellence” in Service from the Board of the JDRF and the “EVMS President’s Faculty Achievement award for Community service”.
