Family and Community Medicine
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) emphasizes the family as a unit and offers comprehensive medical care for all age groups. We take pride in building positive, supportive relationships with our patients and their families. The department places a strong emphasis on community and preventive medicine and evidence-based medicine for highest value of the health care dollar, in an effort to address the needs of the residents of Hampton Roads.
Patients are seen at the department’s two family medicine centers – Ghent Family Medicine and Portsmouth Family Medicine. Both sites use an electronic health record system (EHR) and offer a full range of care for all ages including:
- Women’s health
- Men’s health
- Maternity care
- Care for children
- Seniors care
- Inpatient and outpatient care
We also offer a variety of procedures including:
- Cardiac testing
- Joint injections
- Minor surgery
- Pulmonary function testing
Our commitment to health promotion and disease prevention is also reflected in our staff. Our physicians train resident physicians and students in interprofessional education at EVMS as an extension of our practice. This integration enhances our care and provides an academic advantage unique to our group.
In 2011, both of our practices were among the first in the region to receive a Level 3 Certification (highest level) as a Patient-centered Medical Home from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The strength in our unified practices as physicians and teachers shows in the care we provide for our patients, as well as providing our residents and students with a nurturing and active learning environment.
