EVMS has recognized the outstanding contributions of three faculty.
The Board of Visitors has approved the promotion of Paul Marik, MD, to the EVMS Foundation distinguished professorship in internal medicine, and Gerald Jordan, MD, to the Devine chair in genitourinary reconstructive surgery. The board also approved professor emeritus status for Michael Harper, PhD. Dr. Marik was recruited to EVMS to serve as chief of the Division of Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine within he EVMS Department of Internal Medicine. He came to EVMS in the fall of 2009 from Thomas Jefferson University, where he was most recently chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
In a letter supporting the nomination, Jerry Nadler, MD, chair of internal medicine, describe Dr. Marik as an outstanding clinician, scientist and educator.
He is sought-after as a speaker at national meetings for his knowledge and his ability to explain complex subjects. He is now writing a book on the topic of improving outcomes in the intensive care unit.
Dr. Jordan is a 25-year veteran of the EVMS faculty and a former chair of urology at EVMS. He is internationally known for his contributions to the field of reconstructive urological surgery.
Dr. Jordan is a professor of urology at EVMS and director of the Devine Center for Genitourinary Reconstruction at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The Devine Chair is named in honor of the Devines, a distinguished local family with several generations of physicians.
Dr. Harper is retiring from the CONRAD program (a division of the EVMS Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) effective June 30, 2010. For the past 14 years, Dr. Harper has worked as a research scientist and director of the Consortium for Industrial Collaboration in Contraceptive Research and the Global Microbicide Project, both programs within CONRAD.
Dr. Alfred Abuhamad, MD, Mason C. Andrews professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology, says Dr. Harper's work and contributions as a reproductive biologist have been recognized worldwide. Dr. Harper is a co-discoverer of tamoxifen, which is widely used for the treatment of breast cancer. |
