Six local doctors who either see patients or train students - or both - at Eastern Virginia Medical School have been honored as 2010 Inside Business Health Care Heroes.

Members of the Hampton Roads community nominate physicians for the annual awards, and a panel of judges reviews the submissions. Seventeen health-care providers received awards this year.

Those selected include:
• Alfred Z. Abuhamad, MD, Mason C. Andrews professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology, for outstanding physician specialist;
• John Agola, MD, assistant professor of radiology, for outstanding physician specialist;
• Randolph Gould, MD, assistant professor of clinical surgery and a member of the EVMS Board of Visitors, for health-care leadership;
• Cynthia Kelly, MD, professor of pediatrics, for outstanding advancements in disease management;
• Juan Montero, MD, assistant professor of surgery, for community service; and
• Barry Strasnick, MD, professor and chair of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, for his work leading the Coalition for Hearing Education and Research (CHEAR).

Another honoree, surgeon Glen Moore, MD, is an EVMS alumnus.
