Eastern Virginia Medical School

EVMS begins planning for next era of leadership Print E-mail

Eastern Virginia Medical School has started planning for its next era of leadership, Dr. Pepea process that will see Dean and Provost Gerald J. Pepe, PhD, transition to full-time oversight of the school's research enterprise.

Since early 2009, the school has been crafting a strategic plan to guide its course for the next several years. Part of that process involves a succession plan that allows the school to capitalize on leadership opportunities while continuing to focus on its strategic goals.

Dr. Pepe has created such an opportunity with his decision to move into a new role at the helm of the effort to build a more robust research program, a key priority throughout his six years as dean. His new title, the timing of the transition and other related details will be part of the succession-planning process, which also will involve the Board of Visitors and others from both inside and outside the institution.

EVMS researchers identify potential target for treatment of obesity-related diseases Print E-mail
EVMS scientists recently presented preliminary research findings that identify a specific gene as a potential new target for treating obesity-related diseases.

Two research studies funded by grants from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) examined the role of a gene called STAT4 in the development of Type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related cardiovascular diseases. The research was presented at the 2010 annual meeting of the American Heart Association’s Council on Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

“We’ve known for some time that STAT4 is a ‘gene switch,’ meaning it is one of the genes that regulates or ‘turns on’ immune cells. But, our preliminary findings indicate that STAT4 is also involved in the metabolic process,” says Anca D. Dobrian, PhD, assistant professor of physiology and lead author of one of the studies.
