As a result, this young medical school attracts faculty eager to teach and students eager to learn and serve. Last year, we received nearly 5,000 applications for the 110 positions in the incoming class of medical students. This culture of service distinguishes our educational programs and also serves our clinical mission. Thanks to our faculty’s close collaboration with the local community, EVMS has developed patient care programs closely tailored to the region's needs. These services range from primary care for the underserved to specialized programs in cancer, diabetes, obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics, infectious diseases, psychiatry and surgery. Under the leadership of Dean Gerald Pepe, we are now focused on growth in our research mission. Given our track record in education and patient care, it should not be too surprising to hear that our faculty are focusing on areas in which our region and our state have significant health needs, including cancer biology and infectious diseases; diabetes, obesity and metabolic disorders; women's health and infant development; and heart and vascular disease. I encourage you to learn more about this exciting institution. Behind the facts and figures are extraordinary doctors, scientists, students, and alumni who share in a proud heritage and who are creating a bright future for our community and our state. Harry T.
