Richard V. Homan, MD Provost and Dean

Richard V. Homan, MD, is Provost and Dean of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Va. He joined the school in 2012 after holding several senior leadership positions during 24 years in academic medicine.

Dr. Homan earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed residency training and was Chief Resident at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, Pa.

Following his residency, Dr. Homan served two years with the U.S. Public Health Service at the Whiteriver Indian Health Service Hospital in Arizona. He then launched his academic medical career as Assistant Residency Director and Medical Director of the Family Practice Residency Program Clinic at the Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center, an affiliate of the University of Pennsylvania, in Williamsport, Pa.

In 1989, Dr. Homan began a 16-year affiliation with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. He took on a series of increasingly responsible roles including Director of the family medicine residency program, Chair of family medicine, Chief of Staff, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Finance, Co-Director of the sports medicine fellowship, Dean of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Founding Director of the school's Institute of Aging, Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President for Clinical Affairs.

Dr. Homan managed all operations of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, the Office of Managed Care, the Office of Correctional Health, the faculty practice plan and served as chief executive and academic officer with an operating budget of over $300 million. He improved the school's financial status and capital infrastructure, participated in the development of the independently LCME-accredited Texas Tech El Paso Medical School and coordinated the school's first curriculum redesign since 1969. Dr. Homan was Dean and Vice President for Clinical Affairs at the time of his departure.

Dr. Homan was recruited to the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia in 2005 as Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Annenberg Dean. He was appointed President and Annenberg Dean of the College of Medicine in 2010.

At Drexel, in addition to his role as President and Dean, he was Chief Academic and Chief Executive Officer for the College of Medicine, expanding graduate student program enrollment by 50 percent and overseeing the increase of research expenditures to over $50 million per annum. His oversight included 16 affiliated teaching hospitals and three regional academic campuses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also was President of the company that provides liability insurance for College of Medicine faculty and CEO of the faculty practice plan, having developed the group's founding governance structure and increased clinical revenue from $50 million to $75 million in six years.

A licensed medical physician and surgeon, Dr. Homan is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Family Medicine. He also holds certificates of added qualifications in Geriatric Medicine and Sports Medicine.

He has received more than $9 million in extramural funding for scholarly activities related to the development of community-based medical education programs, healthy aging, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.

He and his wife, Rita Homan, have three children.

EVMS is committed to becoming the most community-oriented school of medicine and health professions in the country. Dr. Homan assumes leadership following a period of significant growth at the school. EVMS recently completed a 100,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building to increase enrollment, expand its modeling and simulation efforts and consolidate its cancer research.

With more than 1,500 employees, EVMS is one of the region's largest non-federal employers. EVMS has nearly 1,000 medical and health professions students in 12 degree and certificate programs. The school also provides medical residency and fellowship training for 300 physicians in nearly 30 programs, and it offers continuing medical education to thousands of health care providers throughout Hampton Roads each year.

EVMS physicians and health-care providers serve more than 1,000 patients daily at locations throughout the region. The school receives more than $40 million annually in basic, clinical and translational research funding.
