Introduction

The Endocrinology Fellowship Program is a fully accredited two-year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Eligible applicants must have received their M.D. or D.O. degree from a medical or osteopathic school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. All applicants must have completed training to qualify for board eligibility in Internal Medicine.

The Department seeks individuals who have excelled in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate medical training, including courses in basic science and clinical medicine, standardized examinations, research and medical and non-medical extracurricular activities, in both their undergraduate and graduate activities.

Description

The goal of the Postgraduate Training Program in Endocrinology at EVMS is to produce endocrinologists who are well trained in all of the following components of metabolic disease:

  1. Provision of total patient management in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, including all of the complications, as well as the endocrine management of diseases of the pituitary, adrenal thyroid, and reproductive systems, parathyroid and metabolic bone disease and common metabolic abnormalities such as the dyslipidemias.
  2. Expertise in diagnostic ultrasonography, as well as its use in fine needle aspiration biopsy.
  3. Expertise in the interpretation of bone density studies.
  4. Administrative aspects of provision of endocrine care services with particular emphasis on process improvement and resource management.
  5. Participation in biomedical research and the acquisition of expertise in protocol design and medical writing.

The successful graduate will possess all of the tools necessary to assume the role of an outstanding endocrinologist and provide optimal patient care in both an academic tertiary and community environment.

Curriculum

The training sites for the Endocrinology Fellowship will include Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, the EVMS Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.

All fellows will participate in dictation of admission H & P or consultation, daily rounds, progress notes and orders on their patients; supervising residents and students as required; and courtesy evaluation of non-teaching service patients if requested by nursing staff or the attending physician. This would include responding to emergency situations.

Fellows will also participate in the Endocrinology Core Lecture Series, a monthly core curriculum series designed to provide the basic science and clinical knowledge necessary to practice Endocrinology, as well as monthly journal clubs and Grand Rounds.

All fellows will be assigned a continuity clinic two afternoons per week starting in their first year.
