
Introduction
The Endocrinology Fellowship Program is
a fully accredited two-year program leading to eligibility for
certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty
of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Eligible applicants must have received
their M.D. or D.O. degree from a medical or osteopathic school approved
by the Liaison Committee on Medical
Education. All applicants must have completed training to qualify
for board eligibility in Internal Medicine.
The Department seeks individuals who
have excelled in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate medical
training, including courses in basic science and clinical medicine,
standardized examinations, research and medical and non-medical
extracurricular activities, in both their undergraduate and graduate
activities.
Description
The goal of the Postgraduate Training
Program in Endocrinology at EVMS is to produce endocrinologists who are
well trained in all of the following components of metabolic disease:
- Provision of total patient
management in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, including all of
the complications, as well as the endocrine management of diseases
of the pituitary, adrenal thyroid, and reproductive systems,
parathyroid and metabolic bone disease and common metabolic
abnormalities such as the dyslipidemias.
- Expertise in diagnostic
ultrasonography, as well as its use in fine needle aspiration
biopsy.
- Expertise in the interpretation of
bone density studies.
- Administrative aspects of
provision of endocrine care services with particular emphasis on
process improvement and resource management.
- Participation in biomedical
research and the acquisition of expertise in protocol design and
medical writing.
The successful graduate will possess
all of the tools necessary to assume the role of an outstanding
endocrinologist and provide optimal patient care in both an academic
tertiary and community environment.
Curriculum
The training sites for the
Endocrinology Fellowship will include
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital,
Children’s Hospital of The
King’s Daughters, the EVMS Jones
Institute for Reproductive Medicine and the
EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.
All fellows will participate in
dictation of admission H & P or consultation, daily rounds, progress
notes and orders on their patients; supervising residents and students
as required; and courtesy evaluation of non-teaching service patients if
requested by nursing staff or the attending physician. This would
include responding to emergency situations.
Fellows will also participate in the
Endocrinology Core Lecture Series, a monthly core curriculum series
designed to provide the basic science and clinical knowledge necessary
to practice Endocrinology, as well as monthly journal clubs and Grand
Rounds.
All fellows will be assigned a
continuity clinic two afternoons per week starting in their first year.
