Jerry L. Nadler, M.D.

Jerry L. Nadler, M.D. is Professor and
Chairman of Internal Medicine and the Harry S. Mansbach Endowed Chair in
Internal Medicine and Director of the Strelitz Diabetes Center at
Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Nadler has been a member of a
Special Advisory Committee on Type I Diabetes with the Director of the
National Institutes of Health Diabetes Institute. Dr. Nadler was also
the Associate Director of the NIH funded Diabetes Endocrinology Research
Center at the University of Virginia. Dr. Nadler has research funding
from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable
Foundation and the Iacocca Foundation. Dr. Nadler is a standing member
of the ADA and NIH grant review committees. Dr. Nadler is the scientific
founder of the DiaKine Therapeutics, Inc., a start-up biopharmaceutical
company developing new, proprietary drugs for unmet medical needs in
diabetes and complications related to diabetes.

One of the leading diabetes researchers in the world, Dr.
Vinik is key in the Strelitz Diabetes Centers quest to cure diabetes. His most
exciting discoveries are "ilotropin" a chemical substance that can reawaken a
cells potential to produce insulin and the gene, INGAP, the protein responsible for
this reawakening. Dr. Vinik came to the Strelitz Diabetes Center at EVMS from the
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he was professor of both Internal Medicine and
Surgery.
Internationally renowned for his research in the areas of
hormone secreting tumors and the chronic complications of diabetes, Dr. Vinik has been
invited to present his work all over the world. Recognized as a pioneer and scholar, Dr.
Vinik has written five books and has published more than 250 papers in medical journals.
Dr. Vinik has received research funding for his studies from the National Institutes of
Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Kroc Foundation and the American Diabetes
Association.

John OBrian, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E.
Associate Director, Strelitz Diabetes Center
Professor of Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School
Dr. OBrian joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center at EVMS having previously been affiliated with the prestigious Bethesda Naval Hospital,
where he served as staff endocrinologist, head of the Division of Endocrinology and
Metabolism, and director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program.
Dr. OBrian has also served as the advisor to the
Surgeon General of the Navy in the areas of endocrinology and clinical research.
Dr. OBrian also directs the Diabetes Center of Excellence and the
Diabetes TIME program at Chesapeake General Hospital in Chesapeake, Virginia.
His areas of expertise include osteoporosis, hyperlipidemia and sophisticated
endocrine laboratory testing, in addition to diabetes.
 Donald Richardson, M.D.
Assistant Director of Education, Strelitz Diabetes Center
Associate Professor of Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School
During his fellowship and postdoctoral training in
physiology and endocrinology at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Richardson established a
reputation as a clinician and teacher with a special interest in endocrine disorders. His
investigations into sexual hormonal changes brought him an Individual National Research
Service Award in 1979. Since that time, his research has produced a number of articles and
abstracts. He continues to focus on hormone related sexual disorders and obesity.

Elizabeth Mason, M.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine
Eastern Virginia Medical School
Dr. Mason joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center in 1996
to pursue her interests in endocrinology and teaching. Previously, she was on the faculty
of the Internal Medicine Department at the University of Virginia where she conducted
basic and clinical research in thyroid disease. Research studies included molecular
mechanisms of pituitary regulation of thyroid activity, inherited thyroid diseases, and
alterations in thyroid function during the menstrual cycle. Dr. Masons clinical
focus is on thyroid disease with a special emphasis on endocrine disorders in women.
