EVMS is hosting an academic symposium to educate students, staff and faculty about pancreatic cancer, the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

Among the speakers for the event, which runs from 1-6 p.m. in the Brickhouse Auditorium in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, is Jai Pausch, widow of Randy Pausch, PhD, who delivered the now-famous "Last Lecture" in 2007. Three renowned pancreatic-cancer specialists also will speak, including Gloria Petersen, PhD, from the Mayo Clinic; Anirban Maitra, MD, from Johns Hopkins University; and Carrie Rinker-Schaeffer, PhD, from the University of Chicago.

Experts from within EVMS also will speak, including O. John Semmes, PhD, professor of microbiology and molecular cell biology and director of the Leroy T. Canoles Jr. Cancer Research Center; Edward M. Johnson, PhD, professor and chair of microbiology and molecular cell biology; and Roger R. Perry, MD, professor of surgery.
