| Gov. McDonnell calls for increased funding for EVMS |

Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that he will call for $5 million in increased funding to Eastern Virginia Medical School as part of his amendments to the current biennial budget. The increased funding will support core instructional requirements for medical and health profession students at in FY2012 enabling the school to hire additional facutly and researcher to train students and serve the health-care needs of the residents of Hampton Roads. The amendment will be considered when legislature convenes in January. “Eastern Virginia Medical School is one of the finest medical schools in the Commonwealth and has been an innovator in medical education. Its focus on service and giving back has had a dramatic and positive effect on the lives of Hampton Roads residents. The importance of the school to Hampton Roads can be witnessed in the fact that one out of four physicians in the area has a tie to the school, either from attending or serving as a faculty member. And, EVMS not only trains doctors but also allied health professionals in a team oriented approach. This much needed healthcare workforce is crucial for the present and future success of the Commonwealth. This state support will help ensure that Eastern Virginia Medical School continues to play a leading role in providing quality healthcare for Virginians now, and for years to come,” Gov.
