Eastern Virginia Medical School held its annual White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2014 Friday, Aug. 20, as part of a week-long orientation and welcome for new student-physicians.
The H. Lee Kanter lecture was given by Margaret E. Mohrmann, MD, PhD, professor of biomedical ethics, pediatrics, medical education, and religious studies and director for the biomedical ethics program at University of Virginia. Dr. Mohrmann addressed the 118 students and urged them to leave their new white coats unbuttoned as a reminder to open their hearts and let the patients in.

The inaugural issue of EVMS Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences (JMHS) is now available. This student-run journal is a compilation of distinguished papers, projects and articles written by student authors with faculty mentorship. All submitted works were reviewed by an editorial team, and future issues of this bi-annual publication will implement a formalized student-run peer review process.
"Medical journals are forums in which many advances in the field of medicine are communicated and ultimately transformed into better patient care, " says Robert Orgeira, marketing director for JMHS and a surgical assistant class of 2011 student. "JMHS will give the EVMS community the opportunity to publish their research and contribute commentaries relevant to health care and medical education."
Copies of JMHS are available in Lewis Hall, Hofheimer Hall and outside the Brickell Library. For more information, visit www.evms.edu/jmhs.
