Guide for Donors

Thank you for your interest in supporting Eastern Virginia Medical School.

This unique school of medicine holds an honored position in American history as the only school of medicine established by a grassroots effort of the local community. Thousands of individuals, businesses, foundations, and civic organizations have contributed generously to help build the EVMS campus, create scholarships, establish endowed chairs, and develop new programs.

Although our donors have created a vibrant, young institution, their real accomplishment is not measured in bricks and mortar, or dollars and cents — but in the innumerable lives that have been saved, enriched, and lived to their fullest. We appreciate your interest in the growth and development of our education, research, and patient care programs, and I hope you will contact me or the Office of Institutional Advancement if you would like to learn more about opportunities for advancing Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Direct Contributions - You may make a direct contribution by sending a check made payable to the EVMS Foundation. You may also use your Visa or MasterCard to make a credit card gift online.

Multi-Year Pledges - You may also make a multi-year pledge, paying the balance over a period of up to five years, according to the payment schedule you establish.

Commemorative Gifts - EVMS offers a very active commemorative giving program. Donors make gifts to recognize birthdays, to offer congratulations, or to express sympathy for the death of a loved one. Those you designate will receive an attractive card, notifying them of the thoughtful way you chose to recognize this important life event.

Stocks, Bonds, and Other Securities - You may also make a contribution by transferring stocks, bonds, or other securities to the EVMS Foundation. With appreciated securities, this type of gift can have significant tax benefits. If you would like to transfer securities directly to one of our accounts, please call the EVMS Office of Institutional Advancement at 757-446-6070 for our brokerage account information.

Gifts of Will and Trust - You may also make a legacy gift by designating the EVMS Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate or charitable trust. There are a variety of planned giving vehicles that meet different estate- and tax-planning goals. The EVMS Foundation can assist you in your planning, and serve as trustee if so desired.

Real Property - You may also donate real estate or other tangible property to the EVMS Foundation. Property may be donated directly, or through a charitable trust or other deferred giving vehicle.

Naming Opportunities - Major gifts offer donors the opportunity to leave a permanent legacy. Endowed chairs and distinguished professorships are the gold standard of prestige at American medical schools.

The minimum gift for endowed faculty positions at EVMS are:

  • $1 million — Endowed Chair
  • $500,000 — Distinguished Professorship
  • $250,000 — Endowed Professorship

Other opportunities include campus buildings and facilities, endowed scholarships and research funds, and named programs. Donors may establish a naming opportunity via direct contributions, multi-year pledges, or irrevocable gifts of will or trust.
