EVMS Sight Savers is a community service opportunity at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Its main purpose is to provide free glaucoma screenings to the Hampton Roads community of Virginia. They hope to target disadvantaged populations and minorities, provide educational material and promote awareness of eye diseases (especially glaucoma), act as a source of referral to free services offered through the Lions Club in Norfolk, and provide pamphlets about free national services. There is no membership fee, and its members will be trained adequately to utilize the equipment and to perform a glaucoma screening. Members of the organization are provided personal, hands-on training to work toward its members' proficiency at the PanOptic ophthalmoscope, take intraocular pressure, operate the machines for visual acuity and visual fields, and patient interview and counseling skills necessary for a glaucoma screening.
