Exchange Program with Bar Ilan Medical School in Sfat, Israel

EVMS is developing a sister school exchange program with Bar Ilan University Medical School. The first phase involves a student exchange program funded by private donors and the Maimonides Society of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater. The program will start in the 2013-14 academic year with two EVMS students and two BIU students completing a four week elective abroad in their last year of medical studies. This will begin with the OB-Gyn Department. The second phase of the program involves faculty exchanges between the two schools. Dr. Steven Warsof, Professor of OB-Gyn and creator of the Bar Ilan exchange program, will return to Bar Ilan where he has taught previously on multiple occasions with the first student from EVMS in February 2013. He will be accompanied on that trip by Dr. Terri Babineau, Assistant Dean of Students where they will speak in the Humanities and Medicine program there at Bar Ilan. During the 2014-15 academic year, the faculty exchange program will be expanded to other interested faculty in other disciplines. The final phase of the program involves developing collaborative research between the partner institutions. Recently founded, Bar Ilan Medical School shares EVMS' community focus as it was created for the purpose of providing improved medical care in an underserved community. Because of the very mixed social economic and cultural background in the area, there are many potential opportunities for unique public health and community health projects.
