EVMS Norfolk Resource Mothers Program/Loving Steps

The Loving Steps Resource Mothers Program is a long-standing program from the Virginia Department of Health that has been assisting pregnant and parenting women and their families in the City of Norfolk since 1997. As part of the Virginia Healthy Start Initiative, the program works to eliminate significant disparities in perinatal health experienced by African-American women and their families in order to prevent infant mortality and low weight births. The program utilizes activities including one on one education from mentors known as "Resource Mothers," as well as providing referrals to other community programs and organizations based on an assessment of the needs identified by the client. The program's population generally includes low-income, child-bearing women from ages 13 to 44 years - focusing on young mothers - that are residents of Norfolk, VA and has reported success in decreasing infant deaths and disabilities and improving the health of pregnant teens and their infants.
