EVMS Family and Community Medicine Student Clerkships

EVMS Family and Community Medicine Student Clerkships

Every year, M3 students complete clerkships with EVMS Family and Community Medicine. As part of this clerkship, students must spend three days at one or more of the nearly twenty community sites offered by FCM. Funded by a HRSA Pre-doctoral Education in Advancing Community Health (PEACH) grant in 2010, the clerkship program was able to send students out beyond EVMS and into the community at a wide variety of sites throughout Hampton Roads. Such sites have included health departments in Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach; as well as weight loss, HIV, and maternity clinics. Other special population clinics like Bon Secours' Care-a-Van, which caters to uninsured adults and children, and the Southeastern Virginia Training Center, which specializes in providing health and habilitation care to the intellectually disabled, are open to the clerkships students as well. Each site provides different service learning opportunities as well as the chance to gain experience with several health disparities and patient populations they will encounter in the local community as physicians. After completion, students are required to complete an analysis of the care barriers and clinical resources available to the patient populations they encountered at each site.
