Eastern Virginia Telehealth Consortium

Eastern Virginia Telehealth Consortium

The use of remote digital technologies to deliver health care outside of the usual hospital or ambulatory clinic environment (i.e. telehealth) has been shown to have the potential to be a significant tool in this effort. In 2010, the Commonwealth of Virginia enacted legislation that mandates coverage for telemedicine services (SB675). The Eastern Virginia Telehealth Consortium (EVTC), which consists of the major health care delivery systems in the Eastern Virginia Region, was formed to meet the rising need for telemedicine. To meet this need, the EVTC has determined five core functional goals. The first is the identification and adoption of technical and clinical standards for the use of telehealth medicine in the region. Next, the consortium aims to provide a forum for communication and collaboration aimed at resolving issues and concerns surrounding the use of telehealth for patient care. In conjunction with this forum, the EVTC will also work to develop research and assessment protocols that can measure and improve how telemedicine impacts patient care. The EVTC will also seek to identify sources of external funding and support grant applications for consortium members, including single system projects as well as collaborations between consortium members. Finally, the EVTC will work to create, implement and assess educational programs for healthcare providers and patients on the use of telehealth. The EVTC is housed in the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
