Community Care Day

Every April, EVMS students and faculty put together a Community Care Day event in order to reach out to the local community through health screenings, health education, entertainment and activities. Over 200 students and community members attended this annual event in 2013, where important health screenings like body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, hearing, cholesterol, dental, vision, and skin cancer checks were provided. The event also provides a plethora of health information via booths and posters, educating the public on topics ranging from proper nutrition to accessing accurate health information via libraries and the internet. Patients, if eligible, are also able to receive referrals to the HOPES clinic at the event. Maury's high school science fair is also regularly conducted at Community Care Day, where Maury students' projects are judged by EVMS students. EVMS also teamed up with the 6th Annual Sea Level Singer-Songwriter Festival of the Tidewater Arts Outreach program in 2013 for entertainment and healing through the arts. A variety of children's activities are hosted at the event, which included arts and craft projects, face painting, and an obstacle course among the favorites.
