What is a Tissue Bank?

A tissue bank is a storage facility for donated blood, serum and tissue specimens such as breast, prostate and lung tissues.

Specimens are kept in sub-zero freezers, liquid nitrogen or preserved in wax blocks. A log is kept of all specimens and each specimen is assigned a unique number and prefix to identify what type of specimen it is.

Researchers use a computer database to access information about the specimens using the log numbers.

Personally identifying information, such as address, phone number, etc., is NOT released to researchers.

Specimens are used to investigate new cancer markers and diagnostic equipment, or to test new drugs against cancer.
