EVMS MD Admissions Print E-mail
Share

Admission to Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is highly competitive. Each year, EVMS receives an estimated 5,000 applications from which approximately 115 students are chosen. The admissions process begins on June 1 and ends on the first day of class in mid-August of the following year. Initial applications are received through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) of the American Association of Medical Colleges.

The Committee on Admissions, which is comprised of members of the EVMS clinical and basic science faculty, community faculty and medical students, is ultimately responsible for deciding which applicants to EVMS are accepted for admission. Private community physicians, faculty members, and medical students contribute their time and effort throughout the admissions process to assure that the best possible applicants are chosen for the entering class. The committee’s goal is to ensure that EVMS continues to graduate physicians who demonstrate academic excellence, compassion, and dedication.

The MD admissions process begins after a completed application is received from the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Electronic applications and the instructions for completing the AMCAS application can be accessed through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Web site.

This application contains information about the applicant, including a “personal comments” section and a record of the applicant’s academic performance. In addition to academic information, the application should include other “life” experiences such as health care exposures, volunteerism opportunities, and work employment history.

Criteria for Admissions

As a medical school dedicated since its inception to the health care needs of eastern Virginia, EVMS shows preference to applicants from the Commonwealth of Virginia, especially legal residents of Hampton Roads. For an applicant to be considered as an in-state Virginia resident for tuition purposes, he or she must have legally domiciled in the Commonwealth of Virginia for at least one year prior to matriculation and must fulfill other requirements to confirm Virginia residency.

Applications from out-of-state students who have strong academic credentials and the personal traits valued by EVMS are also encouraged to apply. Applicants from rural or other underserved regions and those who have been disadvantaged or underrepresented for economic, racial, or social reasons, and who possess the motivation and aptitude required for the study of medicine, are also strongly encouraged to apply.

The body of knowledge a physician must assimilate is vast and complex. For this reason, EVMS requires academic excellence of those students admitted to the medical school. The Committee on Admissions gauges an applicant’s academic ability by his or her performance in undergraduate courses and scores on the MCAT.

The MCAT and a minimum of 100 college semester hours at an accredited American or Canadian university are required. Foreign nationals may be considered for admission to EVMS as permitted under the immigration laws of the United States of America but must have completed 100 semester hours from an accredited American or Canadian college or university. Applicants who are enrolled or are planning to enroll in a degree-seeking graduate program must fulfill the degree requirements for that program prior to matriculating at EVMS.

Course work must include the following subjects:

Biology (with lab)                          1 year

General chemistry (with lab)          1 year

Organic chemistry (with lab)         1 year

Physics (with lab)                           1 year

Applicants are expected to have grades of C or better in all required courses. Credits earned through advanced placement programs or CLEP are acceptable. Applicants may enhance their chances of acceptance by taking graduate course work in natural science. In recent years, students matriculating at EVMS have had a mean GPA of 3.44 and a mean MCAT of 30.

MCAT

The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is a computer-based exam which is offered multiple times throughout the year and must be taken by the prospective student before the application can be processed.

EVMS will only consider MCAT scores from exams taken within two years prior to the application date. We will accept MCAT scores from exams taken in January through September of 2009. The January 2010 MCAT will be considered for wait-listed applicants only. The MCAT evaluates the student’s knowledge of the physical and biological sciences, verbal reasoning skills and writing abilities. An applicant may wish to take the MCAT more than once to ensure the best possible performance. If an applicant intends to take the MCAT for the first time in the fall, review of his or her application will not take place until the score has been received. Information and registration may be accessed online at http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/.

Supplemental Application

Once the prospective student's AMCAS application has been received by EVMS, the Admissions Office may request that a secondary application be completed. This application contains a supplemental questionnaire, a form for letters of evaluation and a form to determine whether the candidate can be considered a legal resident of Virginia. These materials, along with a $100 application fee, must be returned to EVMS within 30 days to keep the file active. If extenuating circumstances make it impossible for the applicant to meet this deadline, the Associate Dean for Admissions will consider requests for an extension.

Deadlines For Applications

Applications for regular admission may be submitted to EVMS through AMCAS between June 1 and November 15, although applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all application materials as early as possible.

Early Decision

EVMS participates in the Early Decision Program. The application period is June 1 through August 1, with applicants being notified of a decision no later than October 1. Early decision or not, all applicants are encouraged to submit materials to AMCAS and EVMS as early as possible. Applicants are strongly urged to contact the Office of Admissions prior to applying EDP.

Interviews

Once all the application materials are received, including an MCAT score, the applicant's file is reviewed by the admissions committee. Those applicants deemed competitive will be invited to the campus for an interview.

The interview panel usually consists of a basic scientist, a clinician, and a medical student. One member of the interview panel is also a member of the Committee on Admissions. The committee member has complete access to an applicant's file, while the other two members of the panel are blinded to academic records and only have access to an applicant's personal comments and life experiences.

The interview provides an important opportunity to assess an applicant's compassion and dedication. The interviewer's essential purpose is to evaluate the applicant's character, motivation, sensitivity, communication abilities, and interpersonal skills, paying special attention to each applicant's exposure to the health care delivery systems. The interview is also designed to help the panel develop an understanding of how the prospective student views the physician's role. The applicant's understanding of national health care issues and sensitivity to ethical dilemmas will also be addressed. While academic performance is not the key focus of the interview, a panel member may elect to clarify issues in the latter part of the interview that deal with the applicant's academic ability.

After the interview, each member of the panel will individually evaluate the prospective student, and these evaluations will be placed in the applicant's file. The member of the interview panel who represents the Committee on Admissions will review the applicant's entire file and present it to the committee. The committee will then make a decision.

Notification of Acceptance

Applicants applying through the Early Decision Program (EDP) are notified as soon as possible, but no later than October 1. General pool applicants are notified on a “rolling admissions” basis beginning October 15.

Applicants offered positions must respond to the letter from the Dean within two weeks of acceptance. This time may be shortened as the starting date for classes approaches. An applicant accepting a position at EVMS must sign and return the Conditions of Acceptance form and a $100 acceptance deposit (which will be applied toward tuition) to hold a place in the class. The acceptance deposit is refundable prior to May 15.

Pre-Matriculation Requirements

EVMS requires completion of the Immunization Requirement form with supporting documentation of proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, polio and tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis. In addition, a two-step tuberculin skin test is required. If an accepted candidate has had a previous positive tuberculin skin test, they must provide a chest X-ray report from less than one year prior to the program start date, documentation of evaluation for preventative therapy from the treating physician and a completed Tuberculosis Symptom Surveillance Questionnaire.

Pre-matriculation immunization forms and documentation must be submitted directly to the Occupational Health Office. Failure to meet pre-matriculation health requirements in a timely manner may preclude a student from matriculating.

Transfer Application and Instructions (62K) pdf-icon-wide

Applicants can be considered for transfer into the second or third year of our curriculum only to fill vacancies that may arise with the withdrawal of previously enrolled students.

In general, all transfers must meet the requirements stated for general admissions. Only applicants who have completed one or more years in a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) can be considered for advanced standing into the second year. Transfer applicants for the third year of our curriculum must be currently enrolled in an AAMC-accredited medical school. Applicants must also take and pass Step I of the USMLE.

The deadline for transfer application is April 1. Students can obtain additional information by writing to the Office of Admissions.
