Sleep your way to a healthy life

Healthy Lifestyle Sleep Tips: 1. Exercise regularly. 2. Get seven hours of sleep daily. 3. Get up at the same time each day.

Sleep is a vital but under-appreciated part of a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that a third of people don't get enough sleep, leading to increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems.

Catesby Ware, PhD, the John and Lillian Norfleet Professor in Internal Medicine and Chief of Sleep Medicine — with 45 years' experience — the dean of sleep specialists in Hampton Roads, spoke with local news media, including The Virginian-Pilot, in the weeks leading up to Daylight Saving Time. Many of his recommendations are helpful any time of year, such as getting up at the same time each day. A regular sleep schedule is important, so he recommends sleeping at the same time on the weekend as during the work week. Seven hours of sleep is ideal for most adults. Morning exercise will help you get to sleep, while late-afternoon and early-evening exercise deepens sleep.
