EVMS programs hold community health events

April 16, 2008

EVMS students and faculty spent a recent Saturday boosting health awareness among the community.

Students from the M.D. program put on the annual Community Care Day at the Norfolk YMCA. Despite gloomy conditions, local residents packed the gymnasium for free screenings, health information and kid-friendly entertainment.

A few miles to the south, students and faculty from the Physician Assistant program hosted the first ever Children’s Health Fair at Chesterfield Academy. The elementary school’s students had the chance to learn about nutrition, safety and general health. Assistance from the Physician Assistant Foundation allowed the program to purchase bicycle helmets and car booster seats to give away to the children, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants provided 500 books to be handed out. The Norfolk Fire Department also was on hand to conduct car seat safety checks and talk to the kids about fire safety.
