EVMS community comes
together at annual picnic
August 19, 2008
NORFOLK, VA — Think medical school is no picnic? Well, it is at
EVMS — at least for one afternoon. President Harry Lester welcomed new
and returning students for a new year Tuesday with the annual
President's Picnic, a relaxed get-together featuring barbecue and
camaraderie.
Students — some with family members in
tow — mingled with classmates, faculty members and school leaders at
the low-key gathering as Lester got acquainted with the additions to the
EVMS community. The picnic is part of a flurry of activity during the first
week of the semester, which culminates Friday with the White Coat
Ceremony for first-year M.D. students. |

Lester shares a laugh with Charles Fletcher, M.D., a former EVMS rector
and current member of the EVMS Foundation Board of Trustees. |

Second-year M.D. student Rachel Weber
beat the mid-August heat with a cool slice of watermelon. |

Jason Helis, M.D. 2011, who also
brought his family to the picnic, shakes hands with Lester. |

Always a family affair, students often bring family members to the
picnic. Joshua Bingham, M.D. 2012, took in a quick game of catch with
his son, Brody. |
