The lecture is named for one of EVMS’ earliest supporters, Harry H.
Mansbach. An attorney by profession, he helped lead the original $15
million fund drive that enabled the school to open in 1973, and he was
chairman of the board when the school received its first accreditation
that year. His service on the EVMS Foundation’s Development Committee
stretched four decades, into the late 1990s when he was honorary
co-chairman of The EVMS Campaign for the Next Century.
Charles M. Mansbach II, M.D., B. Thomas Mansbach and Sally Mansbach
Herman established the endowed lectureship in 1996 as a permanent
tribute to their father on his 85th birthday. Past presenters include
Elias Zerhouni, M.D., director of the National Institutes of Health; and
Robert Mayer, M.D., of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Mansbach family was also responsible for a unique element of the
EVMS campus. Dr. Charles Mansbach, Tom Mansbach and Sally Mansbach
Herman donated the sculpture in the courtyard between Lewis Hall and the
Jones Institute in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of their
parents, Harry and Marie Mansbach.
