NORFOLK—Linda Archer, Ph.D., associate dean for graduate medical education at Eastern Virginia Medical School, is one of three officials chosen nationwide by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to receive the 2008 Courage to Lead Award. The annual award honors distinguished designated institutional officials (DIOs) who are the administrators responsible for all ACGME-accredited residency programs at a teaching hospital, medical school or other type of sponsoring institution. The award is given for leadership in creating an exemplary learning environment for residents, fostering the professional and ethical development of medical residents, and ensuring the safe and appropriate care of patients. Archer, who will officially receive the award at an awards dinner in Chicago February 11, joined the EVMS faculty in 1982. She was officially named DIO in 2000, but has served in that capacity since 1987. EVMS has 318 graduate medical education trainees, better known as residents. All 22 residency programs and two combined residency programs at EVMS are fully accredited by the ACGME, with an average cycle length of 4.1 years. The Graduate School of Medicine at EVMS received full accreditation for five years at its most recent institutional review. EVMS also has one psychology internship accredited by the American Psychological Association, one podiatry residency accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and three programs for which there is no accreditation avenue. Archer received her M.A. in psychology from the University of Florida and her Ph.D. in education from Florida State University.
