Theresa R. Cruthird-Rudd,
recipient of the 2006 Britt Scholarship.

NORFOLK—A major barrier for minority students interested in a medical career is the cost of education, but medical and community leaders are coming together once again this year to help students overcome that hurdle.

The 2007 L.D. Britt, M.D., Scholarship dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. Proceeds from the event benefit the scholarship fund named for Britt, Brickhouse professor and chairman of surgery at EVMS. The endowed fund provides vital scholarship support to outstanding minority students.

The keynote speaker for this year’s dinner is David C. Leach, M.D., executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Leach is a former assistant dean at the University of Michigan.

Certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, Leach received the Good Samaritan Award from the state of Michigan for his 25 years of work at a Detroit free clinic.

The Britt Scholarship Fund started in 1995 when a grateful patient, William E. Russell, Ed.D., established the fund as a way to thank Britt. Since then, the scholarship has helped to pay the tuition of deserving minority students who want to attend EVMS.

Scholarship applicants must have a history of academic prowess—particularly in science, where they must have carried a 3.2 grade point average—and a passion for medicine and community service. They also must have already been accepted to the EVMS M.D. program and have a financial need.

Tickets to the dinner are $50 per person, and reserved tables are available from $500. Sponsorship opportunities also are available.
