Discover how EVMS is
building a healthier future for children
February 20, 2007
On
February 28, EVMS will dedicate its newly renovated research
facilities for the Department of Pediatrics. A dedication
ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m., with open house activities
throughout the day. See below for the schedule of events.
The renovated facilities are home to
several nationally renowned research programs developed by the
Department of Pediatrics. Basic science research, clinical
trials, and community health initiatives developed by faculty
located within the building have made major contributions to
reducing infectious diseases and increasing immunizations that have
improved child health in Hampton Roads and throughout the world,
including the development of a new vaccine that was named "the
best medical research in 2006" by the internationally renowned
medical journal Lancet.
EVMS has launched a new initiative to
expand basic science and clinical research in four areas where our
community has significant health needs: cancer and infectious
diseases; diabetes, obesity, and metabolic disorders; women's health
and infant development; and heart and vascular disease. The
Department of Pediatrics' nationally recognized research, education,
and clinical programs are central to all four of these exciting new
initiatives.
Research facilities for the Department
of Pediatrics are located at 855 W. Brambleton Avenue (the same
building that houses the Strelitz Diabetes Institutes). The
Department of Pediatrics entrance is on the Riverview side of the
building. Free event parking will be available.
See our
map for location, parking, and shuttle information (300k
).
The newly renovated research space for
the Department of Pediatrics is one initiative in a campus-wide
renovation project that Eastern Virginia Medical School launched in
the summer of 2006. Stay tuned for future advances, including
improvements to the EVMS Jones Institute, EVMS Hofheimer Hall, and
EVMS Fairfax Hall. Once renovations are complete, EVMS Fairfax
Hall will be renamed in
memory of Dr. Mason C. Andrews.

coalitions that improve community health, allowing other cities
and regions to learn from the success of Hampton Roads'
nationally recognized Coalition for Infant and Child Health.
Exciting local research and educational initiatives from
innovative faculty in the Department of Pediatrics will be
showcased as well. Share your insights on the challenges and
opportunities for the children of our community. Lunch will
