EVMS to pay tribute to “Mason C. Andrews: Doctor, Teacher, Founder”

January 17, 2007

NORFOLK—Eastern Virginia Medical School will host a memorial tribute honoring Dr. Mason C. Andrews and his contributions to medical education, medical research, and patient care. “Mason C. Andrews: Doctor, Teacher, Founder” begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, in the school’s Lewis Hall auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

EVMS faculty will speak about three key areas of Dr. Andrews’ achievements as a physician:

Howard W. Jones, Jr., M.D., professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology, will reflect on Andrews’ commitment to providing patients with the highest standards of care. Dr. Andrews delivered more than 5,000 babies during his four decades of practice in Norfolk, including America’s first in vitro baby, Elizabeth Jordan Carr, in 1981.

Alfred Z. Abuhamad, M.D., professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology, will talk about Andrews’ commitment to academic medicine. As founding chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS, Dr. Andrews played a key role in shaping medical education and residency programs at EVMS, and establishing the school as a center for biomedical research.

Willette L. LeHew, M.D., former rector of the EVMS Board of Visitors and a community obstetrician who once practiced with Andrews, will discuss Andrews’ role as a founder of the medical school. Dr. Andrews is widely credited as having been the “prime mover” behind the creation of EVMS. He was involved in the planning process from the late 1950s, when the idea of a medical school was first being discussed, until the school accepted its first medical students in 1973.

Lewis Hall is located at 700 West Olney in the downtown Norfolk medical center. For more information about the tribute, call 446-6070.
