NORFOLK—Barry J. Knapp III, M.D.,
associate professor of emergency medicine, received the Governor's
Award as the state's Outstanding Emergency Medicine Services (EMS)
Physician.
Knapp was chosen from all of the
emergency medical directors in the state to receive the award from
the Virginia Office of EMS. Every EMS agency in each jurisdiction in
the state has a physician who functions as the medical director and
under whose license all prehospital providers practice. As medical
director for the city of Norfolk, Knapp sets the standard of care,
is responsible for medical oversight and training, and serves as a
liaison between the city, EMS and the hospitals. He is also
responsible for protocol development and participates in prehospital
research studies.
"It's obviously a tremendous honor to be
chosen from among all the outstanding medical directors in the state
and in the Hampton Roads area," Knapp said. "It's really a tribute
to the everyday providers, administration and chiefs from Norfolk
Fire and Rescue who really allow me to do my job and make it that
much easier."
One of Knapp's favorite parts of his job
is responding to calls with providers, a task he undertakes a few
times a week. He tries to respond to a variety of calls ranging from
serious injuries and illnesses to common complaints.
"It allows me to put a face in the
community, see how the providers do and lend a helping hand when
needed," Knapp said.
Knapp graduated from the State
University of New York at Syracuse and completed his residency
training in at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
