NORFOLK—Russell L. Prewitt, Ph.D., professor
and director of the
Cardiovascular and Renal Research Center at EVMS, has been named
interim chairman of the department of physiological sciences.
“Dr. Prewitt is dedicated to the
missions of EVMS and is highly respected by his peers and colleagues,”
EVMS Dean Gerald Pepe said. “I have complete confidence in Dr. Prewitt’s
ability to lead the Department of Physiological Science during this
interim period.”
Prewitt follows Pepe in the role as
chairman. Pepe led the department for 21 years and had continued in the
post after his appointment as dean and provost.
A 21-year EVMS employee, Prewitt
received his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in Columbia and did
postdoctoral training at the University of Arizona College of Medicine
in Tucson. He is highly recognized nationally and internationally for
his National Institutes of Health-funded research program on vascular
remodeling and hypertension.
Prewitt said he is “honored” to be
chosen for this interim position.
“I am greatly honored that I was chosen
to be the interim chairman with the support of all the faculty members
who were polled by Dr. Pepe,” Prewitt said. “I appreciate their support
and I hope I’ll live up to their expectations.”
Prewitt, a Norfolk resident, said he is
looking forward to supporting the strategic plan that Dean Gerald Pepe
has unveiled to raise the academic status of EVMS nationally and
internationally by building on the strengths of four key areas in which
EVMS excels.
