NORFOLK—Nancy Fishback, M.D., professor, a
member of the EVMS faculty for eight years and the nation’s first
pathologist to be board-certified in sleep medicine, has been
appointed chairman of the school’s
department of pathology and
anatomy.
Fishback follows William Glass, M.D.,
Ph.D., who is leaving EVMS to create a renal pathology division in
Bostwick Laboratories, Inc., in Richmond, Va. and to serve as the
division’s medical director. Dean Gerald Pepe thanked Glass for his
“major” contributions to the advancement of EVMS.
Pepe praised Fishback’s commitment to
and enthusiasm for teaching and research.
“Dr. Fishback is well known to the EVMS
family and is an outstanding educator and researcher with keen
administrative abilities,” Pepe said.
Fishback, who received her B.A. in
psychology from Indiana University and her M.D. from the Indiana
University School of Medicine, also completed a rotating internship
and residency training in anesthesiology and internal medicine and a
pulmonary disease fellowship. She joined the EVMS faculty as an
associate professor of medicine and pathology in 1998 and has
conducted extensive research in cooperation with the faculty in the
EVMS/Sentara Sleep Disorders Center.
Prior to joining EVMS, she was a member
of the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center in
San Antonio where she also completed training in anatomic pathology.
From 1991-1994, she was staff pathologist at the Armed Forces
Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC, and in 1994 was appointed
associate professor of clinical pathology at the Uniformed Services
University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
Fishback said she hopes to bring new
faculty to the department who can complement the core group of
dedicated teachers and researchers who currently work there.
Fishback, who is also board-certified in
internal medicine and pathology, said she also wants to foster more
research between her department and the EVMS Division of Sleep
Medicine. Teaching, however, is her true passion.
“Dr. Fishback is well-known for her
dedication to and performance of outstanding and innovative medical
student education,” Pepe said.
Fishback took a leadership role in
development and delivery of the pathology curriculum for second-year
medical students.
“I can have a really bad day and be
tired and then spend a couple hours in the lab looking under a
microscope with students and I am energized,” she said.
