NORFOLK—Medical student Douglas
Talk , ophthalmology resident Jennifer Galvin, M.D., biomedical
science graduate student Nune Markosyan and Fatma Simsek-Duran,
Ph.D., a postdoctoral student in pathology and anatomy, won
accolades and travel awards during the EVMS annual Research Day.
Marta Ambrozewicz, a biomedical sciences
graduate student, also won an award in the cardiovascular and renal
focus group.
Those awards came during an event that
highlighted 47 research projects on everything from proteomic
studies of leukemia DNA repair mechanisms to an exploration of the
ethics of "Do Not Resuscitate" orders for children who are wards of
the state.
Dean Gerald J. Pepe, Ph.D., praised
participants for their “dedication and hard work to make research
really move at EVMS.” One of Pepe’s major initiatives is to increase
and focus research, which consumes about one-third of the EVMS
budget.
“Research is a very important part of
what goes on at EVMS,” said President Harry T. Lester. With Pepe’s
research plan, “EVMS is poised to become an even more important
research center.”
Edward M. Johnson, Ph.D., professor and
chairman of microbiology and molecular cell biology, who has earned
a nationwide reputation for his AIDS research, delivered a keynote
address on the role of HIV in opportunistic infections of the brains
of AIDS patients.
Students, residents and fellows,
including Galvin and Markosyan, also gave presentations on their
research. Afterward, faculty members strolled among the 47 posters
in Lewis Hall, selecting winners in various categories.
The hall buzzed with students
enthusiastically explaining complex research, often to professors,
judges and faculty members from different fields.
“I was very excited about it,” said
Johnson, who examined research lining the halls after his keynote
address. “Some of the posters were as high quality as you’ll find at
any international meeting.”
This year’s event marks the 18th
consecutive Research Day at EVMS.
