NORFOLK—The 2006 Harry H. Mansbach
Lecture will be presented by his son, Charles M. Mansbach II, M.D., on
Thursday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. in Lewis Hall.
Dr. Mansbach's presentation -- Can
Fat Absorption Be Stopped in the Intestine? -- will be presented
at 4 p.m. in the Roper Auditorium, Lewis Hall. A reception
with heavy hors d'oeuvres will follow.
Dr. Mansbach received
his medical degree from New York University and completed his
residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Duke University.
In addition to reviewing the implications of his research for obesity
prevention, Dr. Mansbach will discuss the opportunities and challenges
of increasing physician involvement in basic science research.
The Harry H. Mansbach Endowed
Lectureship was established by Dr. Charles M. Mansbach II, B. Thomas
Mansbach, and Sally Mansbach Herman as a permanent tribute to their
father, one of the prime forces behind the establishment of Eastern
Virginia Medical School.
Harry H. Mansbach (1911-2002) was a
widely respected and admired lawyer, civic leader, and philanthropist
who played a central role in the creation of EVMS. He was a member
of the original planning committee that laid the groundwork for the
medical school in the 1960s, and he helped lead the original $15 million
fund drive that allowed EVMS to accept its first students in 1973.
As the second chairman of the board, he was 'at the helm' when EVMS
received its first accreditation and the first students arrived on
campus. His service on the EVMS Foundation's Development Committee
spanned four decades, and he served as honorary co-chairman of The EVMS
Campaign for the Next Century from 1995 to 1999.
Established in 1996 in honor of Mr.
Mansbach's 85th birthday, The Harry H. Mansbach Endowed Lectureship
brings a national leader in medical education, research, or patient care
to EVMS each year. Past Mansbach Lecturers have included Dr. Elias
Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Robert
Mayer of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
All EVMS students, faculty and employees
as well as the general public are invited to attend.
