NORFOLK—Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will be the guest speaker at the 11th annual L.D. Britt, M.D. Eastern Virginia Medical School Fund Banquet.

Proceeds from the dinner, which will take place on Oct. 19 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, benefit the scholarship, which supports minority medical students at EVMS. The committee's vision is to have the scholarship grow so that they can award a full scholarship to at least one student in each incoming class. Tuition and expenses are currently $40,000 each year.

Friends and community leaders established the endowed scholarship dinner to honor Britt, Brickhouse professor and chairman of surgery at EVMS. William Russell, Ed.D., founded and chairs the scholarship committee.

Lavizzo-Mourey joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest philanthropy devoted to improving health and health care, in 2001 as senior vice president and director of the health group. Lavizzo-Mourey's past positions include the Sylvan Eisman Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and deputy administrator of what is now the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies.

Lavizzo-Mourey received her medical degree from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She still treats patients at a community health clinic in New Brunswick, N.J.
