NORFOLK—William R. Goldman, Ph.D.,
former EVMS associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral
sciences, died June 15. He was 58.
Goldman, a native of New York City,
worked as a clinical psychologist at the medical school for almost
30 years.
“Bill had a very good sense of humor,”
said Robert Archer, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral
sciences and long-time colleague of Goldman. “He was very bright, a
good communicator and always put the welfare of patients as a top
priority.”
Others who remember Goldman recall his
love for his family, classical music and poetry.
“His therapy office reflected his
personality in so many ways,” said Barbara Cubic, Ph.D., associate
professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. “He always kept it
slightly darkened and tranquil. It was unassuming, which made it a
place where down-to-earth, deeply personal conversations could
transpire. There were no pretenses.”
Goldman was a graduate of Harpur College
in New York and completed an internship at the Institute of Living
in Connecticut prior to earning his doctorate in clinical psychology
from the University of Georgia.
He was known for taking an active role
in the training of psychiatrists and psychologists.
“He leaves a legacy of 28 years of
working with psychology interns and students and providing
first-rate care to those he was responsible for,” Archer said.
