Clinton and Gates visit
CONRAD site in
South Africa
July 18, 2006
Former President Bill Clinton and the
world’s wealthiest man, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates, along with his
wife, Melinda, visited an EVMS
CONRAD (Contraceptive Research and Development) site in Durban,
South Africa, on July 12, as part of their campaigns to stem the
spread of AIDS.

The Gates Foundation has donated $37
million to CONRAD’s efforts to develop a contraceptive microbicide gel
that binds to HIV so that it cannot infect an exposed woman. Clinton has
also made AIDS prevention a central tenet of his philanthropic work.
The EVMS CONRAD program, established in
1986, conducts research to find affordable, easy-to-use methods to
prevent sexually transmitted infections, including AIDS, especially in
the developing world where the need is greatest.
The CONRAD program has conducted
clinical trials on the effectiveness of its microbicide in places with a
high incidence of HIV infection, including Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso,
Uganda, South Africa and India.
