NORFOLK—Craig S. Derkay, M.D., professor of pediatrics and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, will be presented with the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Distinguished Service Award at its annual meeting in Toronto in September.

The prestigious award is given to members in recognition of their volunteer contributions to the Academy and its Foundation.

The AAO-HNS selects recipients for the Distinguished Service Award through a point system, with points earned through various volunteer activities to the organization. Derkay is one of six recipients this year from an organization with 12,490 members.

Derkay, a member of the AAO-HNS since 1988, was the chairman of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Committee, has given two instructional courses at the annual meeting every year since 1991 and has served on the Task Force of New Materials and the Home Study Committee for multiple-year terms.

Derkay’s main research interest is Recurrent Respiratory Papillomas
(RRP), a viral illness caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that causes warts in the airways of children. A vaccine has recently been approved by the FDA to prevent HPV infection, which also causes cervical cancer. As chairman of a multidisciplinary task force on RRP, Derkay lobbied the FDA on behalf of the AAO-HNS and the American Academy of Pediatrics to approve the vaccine. At the request of the AAO-HNS, Derkay will present a seminar about the vaccine and its uses at the organization’s upcoming meeting.

Derkay was also recently elected to a three-year term on the board of the American College of Surgeons for the state of Virginia. He is one of two otolaryngologists on the eight-member board.

Derkay received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington. A Virginia Beach resident, Derkay is married to Kris Kennedy, M.D., an obstetrician and gynecologist. They have two children.
