2006 Dean’s Faculty Achievement Awards

J. Catesby Ware, M.D.

NORFOLK—Eastern Virginia Medical School honored five faculty members June 7 at the 18th annual Dean’s Faculty Achievement Awards.

In ceremonies at the Town Point Club in Norfolk, J. Catesby Ware, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and internal medicine, was recognized with the Dean’s Outstanding Faculty Award, the highest honor given to the faculty by the medical school. Ware, a sleep disorders specialist at EVMS for more than 20 years, is a national leader in sleep medicine. He is founder and director of the Sleep Disorders Center, a joint program of EVMS and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Ware lives in Norfolk.

Honorees are nominated by other EVMS faculty members. The recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the dean.

This year’s other honorees are:

James Lind, M.B.A.

James Lind, M.B.A.

James Lind, M.B.A., assistant professor of family and community medicine, received the award for Achievement in Institutional Service. Lind, CEO of EVMS Health Services, was recognized for his major contributions to committee and administrative functions that significantly affect the mission, goals and welfare of EVMS. Lind lives in Virginia Beach.

Julie Kerry, Ph.D.

Julie Kerry, Ph.D.

Julie Kerry, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and molecular cell biology, received the award for Achievement in Teaching in the Basic Sciences. Kerry has a record of mentoring graduate students within the laboratory and classroom and she consistently attracts underrepresented students to the Ph.D. program. Kerry lives in Norfolk.

George Hoffman, M.D.

George Hoffman, M.D.

George Hoffman, M.D., associate professor of surgery, received the award for Achievement by Community Faculty. Hoffman, a surgeon who is active in undergraduate and graduate educational programs, has been a leader in the use of a variety of minimally invasive surgical approaches. He also led the way for a new laparoscopic fellowship in the area. Hoffman lives in Norfolk.

Paul Aravich, Ph.D.

Paul Aravich, Ph.D.

In addition to the four Dean’s Faculty Achievement Award, Paul Aravich, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and anatomy, received a Dean’s Special Citation for his efforts to inspire and recognize excellence among students and faculty. Aravich lives in Hampton.
