Area preceptors honored
for commitment to EVMS education

NORFOLK—Almost 100 EVMS preceptors
attended the annual Community Faculty Appreciation Reception at the
Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in Portsmouth, April 18.

William Hubbell, M.D., an EVMS
preceptor for nine years, attended the reception with his wife. |
Preceptors from communities around the
region dedicate their time and expertise to help EVMS students get
hands-on experience in patient care.
The Community Faculty Appreciation
Reception is held each year to honor the preceptors’ commitment to the
education of EVMS students.
“I’ve been with EVMS as a preceptor from
the beginning,” said Eric Freeman, M.D., an internal medicine
clerkship preceptor, who specializes in pulmonary and critical care
medicine.
When Freeman started as a preceptor, he
said he thought “this might be interesting.” “Later I realized this
helps me to continue doing something that I enjoy and that is teaching
and I get as much out of it as they do,” he said.
EVMS preceptors volunteer to teach
students about medicine in their clinical setting, allowing the
students to have an active role in caring for patients.
EVMS President Harry Lester and Dean
Gerald Pepe, Ph.D. were on hand to give thanks to the preceptors for a
job well done.
“When I ask students why they came to
EVMS, I continue to get some of the same answers … one of them is we
offer early clinical experience and I want to thank you for that,”
Lester said.
EVMS has more than 400 dedicated
preceptors throughout the community, some of whom have served as
preceptors for more than 10 years.
Most preceptors who attended the event
say the interchange of knowledge with the doctors or physician
assistants-to-be keeps them on their toes.
“There is no monetary benefit to this
but, as a preceptor, I’m helped to stay abreast to what’s new in the
field and I love to teach,” said Olivia Alegre-Ipanag, M.D., a
pediatric preceptor for six years.
“I thank the preceptors for all of their
hard work and dedication to EVMS student education. Their work is
significant and makes EVMS special and enhances the educational
mission,” Pepe said.
