NORFOLK, VA — In his address at the May 16 EVMS commencement ceremonies, internationally known humanitarian Paul Farmer, MD, acknowledged the culture of service at EVMS and encouraged the graduates to commit themselves to a lifetime of teamwork and helping others, explaining that volunteerism is redemptive. "Collegiality and commitment to service … these are the two most important things we can strive for as doctors,” he said. EVMS recognized Dr. Farmer's efforts to improve health care in some of the world's poorest communities with an honorary degree. The school also presented an honorary degree, posthumously, to another exemplary physician, William Cooke Andrews, MD, who helped establish the EVMS Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a national leader in his specialty.
