2006 Alumni Reunion Scientific Session From Today's Headlines to Your Practice: Global Topics and Their Lessons for Medicine Print E-mail

NORFOLK—Some of the medical issues involved in today's current events will be the focus of a Continuing Medical Education program being held as part of the 2006 EVMS Medical Alumni Reunion.

From Today’s Headlines to Your Practice: Global Topics and Their Lessons for Medicine will include presentations on bird flu and other emerging infectious diseases, battlefield medicine in Iraq, issues in transplantation surgery, and lessons from Katrina relief efforts.  Presenters include three EVMS alumni and one EVMS faculty member who have leadership roles in these issues of national and international importance.  (See below for course topics and objectives.)
The scientific session will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 12 in Lewis Hall. The program is open to all alumni, faculty, students, and members of the medical community. EVMS students may attend free of charge. The fee for all others is $50 per person, which covers lunch, refreshments, registration fee, and course materials. Advance registration is required: please call 757-446-6070.

Accreditation -- Eastern Virginia Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation -- Eastern Virginia Medical School designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Objectives: Identify the three levels of treatment facilities in a deployed environment.  Discuss the capabilities of a level II Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon (SSTP).  Describe patient distribution and types of injuries seen at a Level II Surgical Unit in a combat zone.  Explain the method of patient transport to and from SSTP.  Describe the role of En Route Care Nursing in the combat environment.  Relate the patient flow through a SSTP after viewing video presentation.

EVMS Baccalaureate 2009 Print E-mail

2009-baccalaureate_DSC_5611-250wNORFOLK, VA — The 2009 Eastern Virginia Medical School baccalaureate service was held on Friday, May 15, at the Jeanne and George Roper Performing Arts Center at Tidewater Community College in downtown Norfolk.

Keynote speaker Donald W. Lewis, MD, professor and chair of pediatrics at EVMS, discussed the importance of humility in the successful practice of medicine and MD graduate Nabeel Qureshi offered a thoughtful invocation on what it means to be a doctor. Presided over by 2009 MD class president Nicole Reynolds, the program also included readings by MD graduates Krystle Azoury, Carrie Valdez and Emily Sterrett, as well as a performance by EVMS a cappella group Neural Groove. Physician assistant graduates Jessica Womack and Alexis Buettner and MD graduates Katherine Apostolakis, Jennifer Ta and Navindra Ramdath led the reading of the covenant. The Rev. Stephen Ratliff closed the service in prayer.

EVMS Commencement 2009 Print E-mail

2009-commencement-DSC_8746-250wNORFOLK, VA — In his address at the May 16 EVMS commencement ceremonies, internationally known humanitarian Paul Farmer, MD, acknowledged the culture of service at EVMS and encouraged the graduates to commit themselves to a lifetime of teamwork and helping others, explaining that volunteerism is redemptive.

"Collegiality and commitment to service … these are the two most important things we can strive for as doctors,” he said. EVMS recognized Dr. Farmer's efforts to improve health care in some of the world's poorest communities with an honorary degree. The school also presented an honorary degree, posthumously, to another exemplary physician, William Cooke Andrews, MD, who helped establish the EVMS Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a national leader in his specialty.

Medical graduates commissioned as military officers Print E-mail

NORFOLK, VA — Eastern Virginia Medical School graduates destined for service in the armed forces were commissioned May 15 aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin in Norfolk.

Navy Cmdr. David J. Damstra, officer-in-charge of Fleet Surgical Team Four, praised the new officers for their dedication to service and urged them to maintain that passion through all the experiences to which they’ll be exposed throughout their time in the military. Retired Army Maj. Gen. T.K. Moffett administered the Oath of Office to the nine graduates and, after closing remarks by Michael Solhaug, MD, associate dean of academic affairs, family and friends were invited to pin the graduates.
