Theodore J. "T.J." Tzavaras gripped a larger-than-life check in one hand and firmly shook EVMS President Harry T. Lester's hand with the other. Amidst camera flashes and reporter questions, the 26-year-old incoming EVMS MD student anxiously smiled and struggled to find his words.
"I hope that what I do in my career is worthy of this amazing scholarship," Mr. Tzavaras said.
On Wednesday, Mr. Tzavaras was named as the first-ever recipient of the Dorothy M. Middleton Scholarship, a full ride for four years of medical school tuition. The scholarship was established through a generous gift from Dorothy M. Middleton, a friend of EVMS, who passed away in 2007.
