A History of Excellence
Our residency program, initially established in 1974, has been continuously accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education since that time. We have successfully graduated more than 400 physicians during since our inception, and have enjoyed a 100% board pass rate for over five years.

Where you'll train
Ghent Family Medicine
Ghent Family Medicine, an outpatient clinic located within EVMS' Hofheimer Hall, is on of our residency's primary teaching sites. Residents see patients and also attend lectures and grand rounds at this on-campus building, just across the street from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Designated as a Patient-Centered Medical Home, this practice has received the highest level of accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
Portsmouth Family Medicine
Portsmouth Family Medicine is one of our residency's primary teaching sites. Senior residents spend most of their training time at one of two outpatient clinics, seeing patients, participating in procedure clinics and mastering their skills as family medicine physicians. Designated as a Patient-Centered Medical Home, this practice has received the highest level of accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center
Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center is a 346-bed acute care facility providing a variety of leading edge diagnostic and therapeutic services. High-quality imaging, da Vinci robotic surgery, advanced cardiac care, physical rehabilitation, surgical weight loss, behavioral care and maternity care are some of the services the facility provides. The hospital also houses a Primary Stroke Center, an orthopedic center and a sleep center.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Family Medicine residents receive inpatient training alongside pediatric residents at CHKD. Trainees can also participate in pediatric electives at this facility.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is home to the area's only Level I trauma center and burn trauma unit, the region's premier heart program and the primary teaching hospital for EVMS. Its active cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, sleep medicine, epilepsy and oncology programs, as well as its heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplant programs, make Sentara Norfolk General an ideal place for residents to perform their rounds.
Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center has 142 acute beds in medicine, surgery, psychiatry and neurology, 234 extended care beds in intermediate medicine, palliative (hospice) care, spinal cord injury and nursing home care and a 294-bed rehabilitative residential care domiciliary for a total of 670 operating beds. Residents participate in psychiatry and surgery rounds at this facility.
Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic
Sentara's Ambulatory Care Clinic provides uncompensated medical care to uninsured or underinsured Norfolk residents. The Ambulatory Care Clinic is a follow-up option for patients recently discharged from Sentara hospitals and emergency facilities. The clinic offers lab services, X-rays, EKGs, specialty clinics and medication assistance programs, which are available to help patients get prescription medications free or at a reduced cost. Trainees rotate in the clinic and work with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver continuity care and maintain patient relations.

Our community-based Graduate Medical Education is one of the nation's few training programs in which all residencies are integrated among a number of hospitals and community clinic settings, instead of one fixed setting such as a university hospital. Our residents work at 14 teaching affiliate hospitals, staffing hospitals 24 hours a day, implementing new treatment methods and conducting research. They see patients from diverse backgrounds and work with community faculty.
